Integrated Learning Strategies is excited to feature hard work with guest blogger Alek Sabin. While many of the recommendations below are great for children and parents, some accommodations or exceptions may be made for children with learning challenges and learning disabilities.

One of the most important things we can do, as parents, is instill the values of hard work into our children. This is a mindset that will help them accomplish great things, and makes them more independent and self-sufficient as they go throughout their lives. These values will help them become good at many things, because they will know what they can accomplish, if they put their mind to it. However, it can be challenging to find effective ways to get through to your kids and help them develop this mindset, but it’s not impossible. Here are some tips on how to teach your kids the importance of hard work…

Have them make dinner

Putting your kids in charge of a hearty meal for an evening will have multiple benefits. First of all, it helps them learn to cook, which is an incredibly valuable life skill. On top of that, though, it means that everyone in their family will be dependent on them for an evening, and their work will determine whether or not the people they love get to eat. This type of scenario benefits kids who need to learn about the fulfillment that doing work to benefit everyone can do.

Let them make mistakes

There are many parents who will rush in when their children are at the front door of any sort of trouble. However, this may not always be the best case. It’s important that we learn how to fail and make bad choices, when we’re young, so that we can pick ourselves back up again and recognize those red flags when we’re older. It’s important to let your kids make their own mistakes so that they can learn from them, and they can begin to understand that failing is an important part of the process of success.

Challenge your kids

If the only thing that we push our kids to do is the average amount, then they will just coast through life at that level. However, this means that they could be missing out on their full potential. Make sure that the goals your kids set out to achieve are challenging and difficult, although still accomplishable. Your kids need to learn what it means to want something so badly, and then be able to get it after a great amount of effort. Setting up this mentality for your kids early on in their life will help them develop into well-functioning adults who are able to go after what they want.

Draw them to great role models

The heroes that our kids look up to can have a great impact on their development. While every kid will have less-than-perfect role models, while growing up, we can also make sure to sprinkle in some upstanding people who are at the pinnacle of hard workers. Teach them the importance of stories about people who worked hard to achieve great things. However, make sure to stress all the times that these role models failed at what they were doing, before they were able to follow through and get what they wanted. This will reinforce the lesson that failure is an important part of the learning process.

Let them earn money for work, but not all work

We all love money, but a few dollars is something that most adults wouldn’t bat an eye at. However, five dollars can go a long way for a child. Letting your kids get a little bit of money for the work that they do around the house can be a great way to teach your kids about the importance of working for a reward. However, it’s important not to let them get carried away by this. Also make sure that there is plenty of chores that they must do without a monetary reward. There is plenty of work in life that we don’t get paid for, such as cooking for ourselves, and house work, so it’s important to learn the value of that early on.

Have them help with yardwork

Sometimes, the most rewarding work is the hardest work; the kind that makes us sweat. Many times, physical labor is lovingly referred to as “honest work”. Kids need to experience this kind of work, when they are younger, as it is important to be able to have the endurance to follow through on tasks like this when you are older. Yardwork is a great way to accomplish this, and especially this time of year, when the winter is fading away, and we are preparing our garden for spring.
