The founding principal of Avanti House School - the only state-funded Hindu secondary school and England's highest-funded free school - is to leave his post.
Gareth Jones is stepping down from the top job at the all-through school, which opened in 2012 in the Harrow Teachers' Centre in Tudor Road, Harrow, and whose pupils are currently split between the former Peterborough and St Margaret's School in Common Road, Stanmore, and sister Krishna-Avanti Primary School in Camrose Avenue, Edgware.
Mr Jones is being replaced by Mark Bennison, who is principal at The Hazeley Academy in Milton Keynes in Bedfordshire, and who served two years as vice principal from 2006 at North Westminster Community School as it became Westminster Academy.
Avanti House School has earmarked the Whitchurch Playing Fields in Wemborough Road, Stanmore, as the location for a new building to house the secondary school age element of its children from September 2015, and an Education Funding Agency feasibility study approved the land for the development.
Nitesh Gor, chief executive of the Avanti Schools Trust that runs the school, said Mr Jones had resigned for personal reasons and Mr Bennison will assume the role on September 1.
Mr Jones told parents in a letter on June 11: "Can I thank those of you who have phoned, spoken to or emailed me about my future.
"Good schools thankfully are not just about one person and at Avanti House we have great children and a brilliant staff and I have every confidence Mr Bennison will build on the foundations which have been laid and take the school forward in a way which upholds the values and ethos which we have sought to impart."
Mr Bennison wrote on his blog on The Hazeley Academy website: "I have long believed that a headteacher should first work hard to lay the firmest of foundations; build vision and momentum and to create excellent teams around them to raise standards and fulfil a vision.
"Whilst I really had hoped that the right opportunity for my next step would not arise quite so soon, it did.
"Following a selection process last term, I have been offered and have accepted the position of Senior Education Officer for The Avanti Schools Trust – an established multi-academy and free school education trust, based in north London."
Department for Education statistics show the agreed post-opening expenditure on Avanti House School was a record £1,662,440 - the highest in England.
The school will accommodate 1,680 pupils from Reception to Year 12 once it is full and has specialisms in mathematics and the performing arts.
Although designated as Hindu and having a Hindu ethos, it has no faith-based admissions and offers children the opportunity to study ethnics, philosophy and Sanskrit.
